International Non-Profit, “Skateistan” Uses Skateboarding in Afghanistan, Cambodia & South Africa to Empower Youth

When you read the news and see stories about Afghanistan, Cambodia and South Africa, unfortunately, we don’t always read the most promising headlines.

Despite what the news may say, there are positive things happening in these parts of the world.

One of these positive forces is a wonderful and empowering non-profit organization called “Skateistan.”

“Skateistan began as a grassroots ‘Sport for Development’ project on the streets of Kabul in 2007, and is now an award-winning, international NGO (Non-Governmental Organization) with projects in Afghanistan, Cambodia and South Africa.

Skateistan is the first international development initiative to combine skateboarding with educational outcomes.

Skateistan is non-political, independent, and inclusive of all ethnicities, religions and social backgrounds.

Skateistan aims to always be an innovative social project with quality.”

When I watched that video, I couldn’t help but cry tears of joy.

Seeing these young girls get access to education in a country where 13% of Afghan women can’t read or write is absolutely amazing.

Seeing them get a chance to skateboard – or in other words – be free of persecution for a few hours is extremely moving and promising.

In a country where the Taliban often brainwashes young girls and limits their access to any sort of education, Skateistan is creating a wave of social change that is freeing women from years of oppression.

And Skateistan is not just helping young girls – boys and young men are experiencing the healing and empowering effects of Skateistan’s work in Afghanistan, Cambodia and South Africa.

One of Skateistan’s moving mission statements is this:

“Youth come for skateboarding, and stay for education.”

‘Skateistan has developed an innovative, youth-led programming that builds confidence, trust and social capital among children.

We use ‘the hook’ of skateboarding to connect kids with education. We provide opportunities for education, leadership, and creative thinking that help break the cycles of poverty and exclusion.”
